What You Need to Create MIDI
eBooks
- Part I
Computer Hardware
Sound Card
There are now a variety of very good 64 bit sound cards capable of
processing MIDI files to brilliantly to reproduce very rich lifelike sound.

Look for a 64 Bit or even a 128 Bit sound card is now available.
A good general technical guide on sound can be found Here
Speakers
The average PC speakers are totally inadequate for music reproduction.
Good speakers with a wide dynamic range are an essential part of any
sound system.
A quality subwoofer can reproduce all low frequency sounds.
A quality system is able to mimic any sounds produced by a real musical
instrument.

Microphone
A microphone is optional if you want to do your own recordings of voices
or sounds.
I found that for recording your own voice, the best type is combined
with headphones.
Then you have your hands free to type or use the mouse.
Headphones
When you are trying to find a suitable MIDI file, you may be testing
a series of files
for hours on end. You will probably enjoy the experience, but your
partner will be thankful that you work in apparent silence. Listening to
parts of tunes for hours can be irritating for other members of the family.
With headphones you can even work late at night without disturbing anyone.
Although I must admit I look forward to when I can hear the whole MIDI
file in full surround sound on the speakers!
Scanner
This is also optional but is a very handy adjunct to enable you to
digitise photos or other pictures and use the images in your eBooks. You
may have old photos that can be used in your story. The only way is to
get them scanned at 72 dpi resolution.
Digital Camera
Don't hesitate to go out and buy a digital camera. They are so useful
for a variety of tasks that you will wonder how you ever managed without
one. Even the cheap ones will produce a very nice picture suitable for
use on the internet or in your eBook.
Recent improvements in this technology enable near-photographic reproduction
at very high pixel resolutions. At present these cameras are relativley
expensive.
Another Approach
If your computer is already a few years old you may be thinking about
upgrading.
This is the ideal time to buy a good computer designed for high performance
Multi- Media. Several of the leading brands such as Dell and Gateway
or Compaq can supply a computer with all the features that you need.
