The Steps to Creating MIDI eBooks - Part V

How to Organize Your Content
When compiling an eBook it's important that all your files are kept in one directory.
In fact this makes it very easy. So all your HTML pages, Graphics and sound files are stored in one convenient directory with no subdirectories.
Use a short name to identify the directory.

Back-ups
How often have you read about it? Well here it is again! Always keep at least one backup copy of your work in a separate place. Zip disks are handy for this because they can hold at least 100MB which should be enough for any eBook.
If your computer should crash for any reason, you will be saved the agony of having to re-write your story from the beginning.  This will be a daunting, if not an impossible task. It's very hard to find the motivation to start all over again. There are so many things that can and do go wrong with computers.  They can all lead to partial or complete loss of your valuable data. So make back-ups and update them often. Otherwise you will be sorry and nobody will be interested to hear your sad tale about how your computer crashed and lost all your data. You can only blame yourself.

Compiling the Data
Now it's time to use your eBook compiler.
Compilers vary considerably in presentation however they are very similar to use.
We assume you have already installed the eBook compiler on your hard drive.
Just double click on the icon to the run the program.

Name the Project
The first page will open and invite you to enter a name for your project.
This name will appear at the top of each page of your eBook, so this should be the same as the title of your MIDI-eBook

The Author
You can use your own name or an assumed name.

Starting Page
You will need to enter the name of the starting page HTML file.
You will have already composed a dramatic opening page to excite your viewers.
All other pages will follow in sequence from this page.

Opening Message
You may be invited to write some text for an opening message that will appear just before the eBook opens.  I suggest "Don't forget to switch on your sound system!"

Nominate the Directory
You can use the browse button to zoom in to the directory containing your eBook data, or simply type in the path. e.g. C:\ebooks\MyFirstBook.html

Security Issues
The next thing you must decide is the type of security you want to have over your
eBook. The compiler offers to prevent using the Windows copy option using the right mouse button. It can also offer a variety of ways to protect your eBook with passwords or time limited useage.  The simplest method is to have no security, allowing the user to freely copy the content.

Where to Put the Compiled eBook?
Next you will be invited to nominate a directory where you want the finished eBook to be stored.  This can be the desktop or any convenient directory which is easy to find.
You will also be asked to name the finished file.
Then you can click on the Compile or Finish button.
After a short time you will be notified that  the compilation is complete.
You can then quit the compiler program.

Testing your MIDI-eBook
Click on the Icon and run the eBook.
Don't be surprised if things don't work perfectly first time.
There are many things that can go wrong. They are mainly small items that you forgot.
After making a list of all corrections needed, you can compile the book again.
You may have to do this several times before you iron out all the bugs.
However with patience and meticulous care for all the details you will soon have an eBook that you can be proud of.

A final Test
It is wise at this stage to give your friends a copy to try out.
They may spot a few more errors that were overlooked before and they may suggest one or two MIDI files be replaced with better ones.
In this case you will have to recompile the MIDI-eBook once more.
You can supply the file on a Zip disk or you can upload the file to a web site.
